Weekly Update 9-16-2016
This week Exploration Academy students really dove into their learning for the year, beginning advisor meetings, seminars, and individual projects.
Mr. Welty’s seminar is focused on teaching students the process for designing and carrying out projects while learning about the impact of major historical events on Verona. To date, students learned about the planning process and started research. Next week on Tuesday we will be walking to the Verona Public Library to look through their archived records.
Mr Bruss’s seminar is focussing on Anatomy and Physiology. This week students dissected a pickle…yes, you read that correctly. It served as an inexpensive way to get practice using dissection tools safely, working collaboratively in groups and using the Notability app to document dissections. Next week students will be researching organ systems of the frog on Tuesday and dissecting a frog on Thursday.
In addition, Mr. Lewis is continuing his Short Stories Seminar. Students are off to a great start; they all finished their assignments for the week. Mr. Lewis will also be starting a reading support seminar next week.
The weather reports were not cooperating with us so we did postpone our canoe trip. The make up date is next Friday, September 23.
Finally, we want to recognize Debrell Fountain-Carr, one of our new students. He started an organization called Building Bosses. A story about Debrell and his organization was featured on NBC 15 today. Below is a link to his story.
