Weekly Update 10-21-2016
Happy Friday! This past week an Election Seminar began that is focused on the electoral process, the party platforms, and the issues of this election. So far students have reviewed the electoral process and today we began to discuss some of the issues. Next Tuesday, during the seminar we will be walking to the Verona City Building to meet with the County Clerk. She will be talking about her role in the election process and the job of the clerk.
In addition to the Election Seminar starting this week, next week 3 other new seminars will be beginning. One will be devoted to reading A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, and analyzing how the play was influenced by United States history from the Civil War to the 1954 Brown v Board of Education Supreme Court decision. Another seminar will focus on the Civil Rights Movement including its events, people, legislation, and music. We will also look at today’s racial issues. Finally, a computer science seminar will be beginning. This seminar will be an introduction into the basics of programming, no experience is necessary.
Some students also had the opportunity this past week to visit the Aldo Leopold Center where they learned about orienteering and map making. We look forward to the projects that come from that experience.
Looking ahead at the next few week there are a few important dates to remember as well.
- Parent/Teacher conference time is schedule for the VAHS/EA next Monday from 4-8 and Thursday from 7:15-11:15. This is a chance to meet your student’s elective teachers and check in on their process. Your student’s advisors will be available in EA if you would like to discuss their progress. In addition, Exploration Academy will be scheduling student/parent/teacher conferences in January for all families.
- All students in the district do not have school next Thursday, October 27, or Friday, October 28th for a fall break. Students’ advisors will be communicating about assignments over those days. School will resume on Monday, October 31st.
- Our first of two project showcases is just around the corner. On Thursday, November 17th, from 6-8, students will showing off their best work from the first months of the school year. All students are expected to attend this evening.
Have a great weekend!
